California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Louis J. Stellman was born on January 6, 1877 in Baltimore, Maryland. After briefly trying pharmacy, then telegraphy, he settled down at the turn of the century as a Los Angeles newspaperman. In 1902 he moved to San Francisco and worked as a reporter, then an editor, for the NEWS. He later became an editorial and feature writer for the BULLETIN.
